I was having tea at home on the evening of 30th January 1948, when I was called to Birla House by an urgent telephone. Gandhiji had been shot on his way to a prayer meeting. I was numb with shock as I got into the car.

At the Birla House, Gandhiji’s relatives and followers had gathered around his body. There was silence in the room as Gandhiji breathed his last. Words of Bapuji’s death had spread through Delhi like a flame fanned by the wind. Sad groups of men and women had collected around Birla House. Out of every window, one could see a brown blur of faces. They did not make a sound. There was an unnatural silence. It was as if time stood still for those few minutes.

The people were too stunned to speak in the beginning. Later they clamoured wildly, shouting and crying. They jostled one another in a stampede to break into the house. They calmed a little when it was announced that they would be allowed to see Gandhiji before the funeral.

৩০ শে জানুয়ারি ১৯৪৮ সাল, সন্ধ্যায় আমি চা খাচ্ছিলাম। তখন বিড়লা হাউস থেকে একটি গুরুত্ব পূর্ন টেলিফোন কল এলো। প্রার্থনা সভায় যাওয়ার পথে গান্ধীজিকে গুলি করে হত্যা করা হয়েছে। খবরটা শুনে আমার মুখ থেকে আর কোন কথা বের হলো না। আমি চুপচাপ গাড়িতে উঠলাম।

বিড়লা হাউসে গিয়ে দেখলাম গান্ধীজীর আত্মীয় স্বজন ও তার অনুগামীরা তার দেহ আগলে বসে আছেন। গান্ধীজি শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেছেন এবং পুরো এলাকাটা একেবারে নিস্তব্ধ। গান্ধীজীর মৃত্যুর খবর পুরো দিল্লিতে দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়ল। দুঃখী মানুষজন সবাই বিড়লা হাউসের সামনে সমবেত থাকলো। জানলা দিয়ে যতদূর দেখা যায় ততদূর শুকনো মানুষের মুখ ভেসে উঠতে লাগলো। কেউ শব্দ করছিল না। একটা অদ্ভুত নিস্তবতা বিরাজ করছিল যেন মনে হচ্ছিল সময় কয়েক মিনিটের জন্য থেমে গেছে।।

প্রথম প্রথম মানুষ একেবারেই কথা বলছিল না। তারপর তারা চিৎকার চেঁচামেচি করতে লাগলো। তারা একে অপরের সাথে ঠেলাঠেলি করতে লাগলো বিড়লা হাউসে ঢোকার জন্য । অনেকক্ষণ পর যখন ঘোষণা করা হলো যে, তারা প্রত্যেকেই গান্ধীজীর অন্তিম ক্রিয়াতে অংশগ্রহণ করতে পারবে তখন মানুষজন কিছুটা শান্ত হল।

যখন কারোর প্রিয়জন মারা যায় তখন মানুষ ফুপিয়ে ফুপিয়ে কাঁদে। “এবার আমার কি হবে?” তিনি তো আর নেই। এটাই হয়তো সেই প্রশ্নটা যেটা এই দুঃখী মানুষগুলোর মনে ঘুরপাক খাচ্ছে। দেখে মনে হচ্ছিল তাদেরকে, যেন তারা পিতৃহারা সন্তান। এই প্রশ্নটা শুধু তাদের না, আমাদের মনেও ঘুরপাক খাচ্ছিল। আমরা যারা বসে ছিলাম। এখনো অবিশ্বাস্য। আমরা রেডিওতে শুনতে পেলাম ঘোষণা করা হচ্ছে, যে ভারতে জনসাধারণ তাদের প্রিয় বাপু আর তাদের মধ্যে নেই।

Gandhiji’s funeral was to take place the day after his death. Hours in advance, people lined the route the funeral procession was to follow. Padmasi, Mrs Naidu’s daughter, spoke for us all when she said simply: we will walk. It is the last time we shall be walking with Bapu.

It was an agonizing walk, Thousands silently watched the procession. Bapu lay on a truck covered with flowers. Thousands of people wept, trying to touch Bapu’s feet. It was impossible to move in the thick crowd.

As I moved forward slowly I understood I was not merely in the midst of grieving people. This was even more than the funeral procession of India’s beloved leader. I was among people for whom walking with Bapu had a special meaning. we had walked with Bapu over the rough and smooth of India’s recent history. We could not now accept the fact that the man who had led us over many difficult paths, was never going to walk with us again. Bapu’s slight figure had walked, staff in hand, over a large part of India. To walk is to make slow progress. It is to think with clarity and closely look at all that is around you, from small insects to the horizon in the distance. Moreover, walking was often the only way open to the average Indian. It required no vehicle except his own body and cost him nothing but his energy. Gandhiji took this necessity, as he took much that was commonplace and transformed it into a joyful effort.

হাঁটাটা ছিলো খুব বেদনাদায়ক। হাজার হাজার মানুষ নিস্তব্ধে শোভাযাত্রা দেখছিলেন। একটা ট্রাকের উপর গান্ধীজীর শবদেহ শোয়ানো ছিল, ফুলে ঢাকা। হাজার হাজার মানুষ কাঁদছিল, গান্ধীজীর পা ছোঁয়ার চেষ্টা করছিল। ঘন জনতার মধ্যে এগিয়ে যায় প্রায় অসম্ভব হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছিল।

যখন আমি এই ভিড়ের মধ্য দিয়ে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছিলাম, আমি বুঝতে পারলাম যে আমি শুধু মাত্র কিছু দুঃখী মানুষ জনের মধ্যে রইছি না। এটা ভারতের সবচে প্রিয় নেতার মৃত্যুর থেকেও অনেক বেশি কিছু। আমি এমন অনেক মানুষের মধ্যে রইছি, যেখানে যাদের কাছে গান্ধীজীর সাথে হাঁটা একটি বিশেষ অর্থ বহন করে। ভারতের সমসাময়িক ইতিহাসে আমরা বিভিন্ন সময়ে গান্ধীজীর সাথে হেঁটেছি। আমরা এই বিষয়টা মেনে নিয়ে পারছিনা, যে মানুষটা আমাদের কঠিন সময়ে নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিলে, আর কখনো আমাদের সাথে হাঁটবে না। শীর্ণ চেহারর বাপু হতে লাঠি নিয়ে প্রায় সারা ভারত হেঁটেছিলেন। হাঁটলে দ্রুত যাওয়া যায় না। কিন্তু হাঁটলে পরিষ্কার ভাবে, কাছ থেকে সব কিছু দেখা যায়, ছোট পতঙ্গ থেকে একেবারে দিগন্ত পর্যন্ত। সর্বোপরি হাঁটাই ছিলো অধিকাংশ ভারতীয়র আন্দোলনের প্রধান উপায়। এটার জন্য কোন গাড়ি বা খরচ লাগে না, লাগে শুধু শরীর আর শক্তি। গান্ধীজি এই সহজ সত্যটা বুঝেছিলেন। তিনি অতি সাধারণ এই বিষয়টাকে একটা আনন্দ দায়ক প্রচেষ্টাতে পরিণত করেছেন।

Some days after the funeral, a special train took Gandhiji’s ashes to Allahabad. The compartment was decked with flowers. People on the train sang bhajans. People did not weep any more for they could feel Gandhiji’s presence amid the flowers and the songs. At every station, sorrowful crowds filled the platform. Amid song and prayer, the train reached Allahabad. The ashes were immersed in the Ganges where a huge crowd had gathered at the bank. Afterwards, we all went back to Delhi.

Back in Delhi, I felt at sea. I had not directly walked with Gandhiji, gone to prison at his call or made any sacrifice for my country. My sisters and I, and the other people like me, had been merely onlookers. But still, I felt at sea. I felt I had grown up within a magic circle. With Bapu’s passing away, I felt the magic circle had vanished, leaving me unprotected.

With an effort I roused myself. I asked myself- had Bapu lived and died for nothing? How could I so easily lose courage when he was no longer there? My values were not so weak. We were still there, young, strong and proud to bear his banner before us. Bapu had passed away but his India would continue to live in his children.

শেষকৃত্যের কয়েকদিন পর, একটি বিশেষ ট্রেনে করে গান্ধীজীর চিতাভস্ম এলাহাবাদে নিয়ে যাওয়া হলো। কামরাটি ফুল দিয়ে সাজানো ছিল। ট্রেনের যাত্রীরা ভজন গাইছিল। মানুষ আর কাঁদছিল না। কারণ ফুল ও ভজন এর মধ্যে মানুষ গান্ধীজিকে খুজে পাচ্ছিল। প্রত্যেক স্টেশনে দুঃখী মানুষের ভিড়। প্রার্থনা ও গান গাইতে গাইতে ট্রেনটি এলাহাবাদে পৌঁছালো। চিতাভস্ম গঙ্গায় বিসর্জন দেওয়া হলো। আর গঙ্গার তীরে ছিল ছিল জনসমুদ্র। অবশেষে আমরা সবাই আবার দিল্লিতে ফিরে এলাম।

দিল্লিতে ফিরে কোন দিশা খুঁজে পেলাম না। আমি কখনো গান্ধীজীর সাথে হাঁটিনি বা তার ডাকে জেলেও যায়নি বা দেশের জন্য আত্ম বলিদানও দেইনি। আমি এবং আমার বোন এবং আমার মত অন্যান্য কম বয়সীরা, শুধুমাত্র সবকিছু দূর থেকেই দেখেছি। তবুও আমি দিশা খুঁজে পেলাম না। আমার মনে হচ্ছে আমি যেন একটা মায়াজগতে বাস করতাম। বাপুর চলে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে সেই মায়া জগত অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেছে এবং এখন আমি অসুরক্ষিত।

একটু চেষ্টা করে আমি নিজেকে তুলে ধরলাম। আমি নিজেই নিজেকে প্রশ্ন করলাম, বাবুর এই মৃত্যু এবং কর্মজীবন এর কি কোন মূল্য নেই? এত সহজে কিভাবে আমি আমার সাহস হারিয়ে ফেলতে পারি যখন তিনি আর নেই। আমার মর্যাদা এত দুর্বল না। লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষ সাধারণ মানুষ হয়েই থেকে যেত তিনি তাদেরকে এই আগ্রহীনতা থেকে পরস্পরের কষ্টের মধ্যে জাগ্রত করেছিলেন। তাহলে বাপু চলে গেলে কি আসে যায়? আমরা কম বয়সী, শক্ত সামর্থ্য ও গর্বিত মানুষেরা তো তার পতাকা সম্মুখে বহন করে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য এখনো রয়েছি।

বাপু চলে গেছেন কিন্তু তার ভারত তার সন্তানদের মধ্যে বেঁচে থাকবে।
