About William Cowper

William Cowper was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th-century poetry by writing about everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of English Romantic poetry. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him “the best modern poet” and Wordsworth admired his poem “Yardley Oak”. He was a nephew of the poet Judith Madan. His religious sentiment and association with John Newton led to much of his poetry for which he is best remembered. He also wrote a number of anti-slavery poems. Cowper was seized with dropsy in the spring of 1800 and died.

Cowper was known for his poems. The Snail is his notable poem. Other poems like The Winter Nosegay, John Gilpin, The Rose, and The Task were written in his fifties.
