Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson was born on May 25, 1803, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father William Emerson died of stomach cancer when Ralph was not fully eight. His schooling started at the Boston Latin School in 1812. Later he attended Harvard College. Over the next several years, Emerson made his living as a school teacher and then as a lecturer. He popularized the doctrine of ‘transcendentalism’. He read the ‘Bhagavadgita and Vedanta which left a strong shade of ‘non-dualism on his theory. His popular essays include Nature, Self-Reliance, The Conduct of Life etc. A mystic and a strong crusader against Slavery, Emerson published poems also. Among his celebrated poems are included Brahma, Dirge, Eros, Fate, Fable etc.
