R K Narayan
One of the notable writers of Indian English, Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanswami was born in Madras on October 10, 1906. R. K. Narayan along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao were notable pre-independence Indian English Writers.
He attended many schools including L. M. School, C.R.C. High School, Christian College High School and finally Maharajah’s College High School where his father was a Headmaster of a school. His father’s library and that of this school supplied his early literary diet.
Narayan’s writing career spanned over sixty years. His semi-autobiographic trilogy includes Swami and Friends, The Bachelor of Arts and The Dark Room. Narayan’s noted collections of short stories Malgudi Days and The English Teacher are still widely read. His novel The Guide was filmed. Vast of his stories are set in the imaginary town of Malgudi. Narayan’s simple style, lucid language and gentle irony help to portray the variety and colour of Indian life.
