Of course, there was nobody for us to play with on the Big Half Moon. We just had to make the most of each other, and we did.
বিগ হাফ মুন দ্বীপে আমাদের সাথে খেলার জন্য কেও ছিল না। তাই আমরা নিজেদের মধ্যেই খেলতাম।
We live on the Big Half Moon island, ‘We’ are Father and Claude and I and Aunt Esther and Mimi and Dick. It used to be only Father and Claude and I. It is all on account of the kite that there are more of us. This is what I want to tell you about.
আমরা বিগ হাফ মুনে বাস করতাম। আমরা বলতে, আমি, ক্লড ও আমার বাবা, এস্থার মাসিমা, ডিক ও মিমি। কিন্তু আগে শুধু আমি, আমার বাবা ও ক্লড থাকতাম। একটি ঘুড়ির কারনে আজ আমরা এত জন একসাথে হয়েছি। সেই গল্পটায় এখন আমি তোমাদের বলবো।
Father is the keeper of the Big Half Moon lighthouse. I am eleven years old. Claude is twelve. In winter, when the harbour is frozen over, we all move over to the mainland. As soon as spring comes, back we sail to our own dear island.
আমার বাবা ছিলেন বিগ হাফ মুন লাইট হাউসের রক্ষক। আমার বয়স ১১ ও ক্লড এর বয়স ১২। যখন শীতকালে বন্দর জমে যেত, আমরা সবাই মেনল্যান্ড এ ফিরে যেতাম। আবার যখন বসন্ত আসত, আমরা আবার সবাই আমাদের প্রিয় দ্বীপে ফিরে আসতাম।
The funny part used to be that people always pitied us when the time came for us to return. They said we must be so lonesome over there, with no other children near us. Of course, Claude and I would have liked to have someone to play with us. It is hard to run pirate caves and things like that with only two. But we used to quarrel a good deal with the mainland children in winter. So it was perhaps just as well that there were none of them on the Big Half Moon. Claude and I never quarrelled.
সবচেয়ে মজার বিষয় হল, যখন আমাদের ফেরার সময় হতো, মেনল্যান্ড এর লোকজন আমাদের খুব মায়া দেখাত। সবাই বলত, বেচারা, ছোটো ছোটো ছেলে মেয়ে, ওই দ্বীপে একাই থাকতে হয়, খেলার মতো কোনো সঙ্গী সাথী নেই । সত্যি কথা বলতে, আমি o ক্লড চাইতাম, আমাদের কোনো খেলার সাথী থাকলে ভালো হয়। কেননা, দস্যু ও গুহা এর মত খেলা দুজনে খেলা খুব কষ্টের, প্রায় অসম্ভব। কিন্তু আমরা শীতের সময় মেনল্যান্ড এর ছেলে মেয়েদের সাথে খুব ঝগড়া করতাম। এর কারণ হয়তো, যেহেতু ওই দ্বীপে আমাদের সাথে ঝগড়া করার কেও ছিল না, তাই আমরা এখানে ঝগড়া করে সাধ মিটিয়ে নিতাম। আমি o ক্লড নিজেদের মধ্যে কখনো ঝগড়া করতাম না ।
To be sure, Father didn’t seem to have any relations except us. This used to puzzle Claude and me. Everybody on the mainland had relations. Why hadn’t we? Was it because lived on an island? We thought it would be so jolly to have an uncle and aunt and some cousins. Once we asked Father about it, but he looked so sorrowful that we wished we hadn’t. He said it was all his fault. Claude and I didn’t understand what he meant.
এমনিতে মনে হতে আমরা দুজন ছাড়া বাবার আর কোনো আত্মীয় নেই। এই ব্যাপারটা আমাদেরকে অবাক করে দিত। মেনল্যান্ড এ সবার আত্মীয় আছে; আমাদের নেই কেন? আমরা নির্জন দ্বীপে বাস করি বলে? আমরা ভাবতাম, যদি আমাদের কোনো কাকা কাকিমা ও মামাতো কাকাতো ভাই বোন থাকতো – খুব মজা হতো। একবার আমরা বাবাকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলাম কিন্তু আমাদের প্রশ্ন সোনার পর বাবা এতটাই দ্দুখি হয়ে গেলেন যে, আমাদের মনে হলে, বাবাকে এই রকম প্রশ্ন না জিজ্ঞেস করলেই ভালো হতো। তিনি উত্তরে বলেছিলেন, সব তারই দোষ। ক্লড বা আমি কেউই তার কথার অর্থ বুঝতে পারিনি।
Our Runaway Kite Unit 2 Text with Bengali Meaning
It is always lovely on the Big Half Moon in summer. When it is fine, the harbour is blue and calm, with little wind and ripples. Every summer, we had some hobbies. The last summer before Dick and Mimi came, we were crazy about kites. A boy on the mainland showed Claude how to make them. Back on the island, we made plenty of kites. Claude would go around to the other side of the island and we would play shipwrecked mariners signalling to each other with kites.
বিগ হাফ মুনে গ্রীষ্ম কাল খুবই মনোরম। যখন আবহাওয়া ভালো থাকে, তখন বন্দর একেবারে নীল ও শান্ত থাকে, হালকা বাতাস ও ছোট ছোট ঢেউ। প্রতি গ্রীষ্মে আমরা নতুন নতুন মজার খেলা খেলতাম। গত গ্রীষ্মে আমরা ঘুড়ি নিয়ে পাগল হয়ে উঠলাম। মেনল্যান্ড এর একটা ছেলে ক্লড কে শিখিয়ে দিয়েছিল, কিভাবে ঘুড়ি বানাতে হয়। দ্বীপে ফিরে আমরা অনেক ঘুড়ি বানালাম। ক্লড দ্বীপের উল্টো দিকটায় যেত এবং আমরা “বিপন্ন জাহাজের নাবিক”, ঘুড়ি উড়িয়ে একে অপরকে সিগনাল দিতাম।
We had a kite that was big and covered with lovely red paper. We pasted gold tinsel stars all over it and had written our names full on it-Claude Leete and Philippa Leete, Big Half Moon lighthouse.
আমাদের একটা বিশাল বড় লাল রঙের ঘুড়ি ছিল। আমরা সোনালী পুতি দিয়ে সেটা সাজিয়ে ছিলাম এবং ঘুড়ির উপর আমদের পুরো নাম লিখে দিয়েছিলাম – ক্লড লিটি ও ফিলিপ্পা লীটি, বিগ হাফ মুন লাইট হাউস।
One day there was a grand wind for kite-flying. I’m not sure how it happened, but as I was bringing the kite from the house, I tripped and fell over the rocks. My elbow went clear through the kite, making a big hole.
একদিন খুব সুন্দর বাতাস বইছিল, ঘুড়ি উড়াবার পক্ষে আদর্শ। আমি ঠিক মতো বলতে পারবো না কিভাবে ব্যাপারটা ঘটল। তবে যখন আমি বাড়ি থেকে ঘুড়িটা নিয়ে আসছিলাম, একটা পাথরে হোচট খেয়ে মাটিতে পরে গেলাম । আমার কনুই ঘুড়ির মধ্য দিয়ে চলে গেলো এবং ঘুড়িতে একটি বড় ছিদ্র হয়ে গেল।
We had to hurry to fix the kite if we wanted to send it up before the wind fell. We rushed into the lighthouse to get some paper. We knew there was no more red paper. We took the first thing that came in handy an old letter lying on the bookcase in the sitting room. We patched the kite up with the letter, a sheet on each side and dried it by the fire. We started out and up went the kite like a bird. The wind was glorious and it soared. All at once-snap! And there was Claude, standing with a bit of cord in his hand, looking foolish. Our kite had sailed away over to the mainland.
ঘুড়িটা তাড়াতাড়ি মেরামত করতে হবে, কেননা এত সুন্দর বাতাস বেশিক্ষণ স্থায়ী হবে না। আমরা লাইট হাউসে দৌড়ে গেলাম, কিছু কাগজ আনার জন্যে। আমরা জানতাম আর লাল রঙের কাগজ নাই। তাই হাতের কাছে যা পেলাম – একটা পুরনো চিঠি যেটা আমাদের বসার ঘরের বইয়ের তাকে বহু দিন ধরে পড়ে ছিল। আমরা আঠা দিয়ে চিঠিটা আমাদের ঘুড়ির দুপাশে লাগিয়ে দিলাম এবং আগুনে সেঁকে তাড়াতাড়ি শুকিয়ে নিলাম। তারপর ঘুড়ি উড়তে শুরু করলাম। আমাদের ঘুড়িটা পাখির মতো আকাশে উড়ে গেল। বাতাসটা ছিল চমৎকার এবং ঘুড়িটা উড়তে লাগলো। তারপর হঠাৎ ঘুড়ির সুতোটা কেটে গেলো। ক্লড হতে লাটাই ও একটু সুতো নিয়ে বোকার মতো দাড়িয়ে রইলো। আমাদের ঘুড়ি বাতাসে ভাসতে ভাসতে মেনল্যান্ড এর দিকে চলে গেলো।

A month later a letter came for Father. After he finished reading it, his eyes looked as if he had been crying. “Do you want to know what became of your kite?” he said. Then he sat down beside us and told us the whole story.
এক মাস পর বাবার একটা চিঠি এলো। যখন তার চিঠিটি পড়া শেষ হল, বাবার চোখ দেখে মনে হলো, বাবা কাঁদছিলেন। ‘তোমরা কি জানতে চাও তোমাদের ঘুড়িটার কি হয়েছিল?” বাবা বললেন। তারপর তিনি আমাদের পাশে বসলেন ও আমাদের পুরো গল্পঃটা বলেছিলেন।
Father had a brother and a sister. He had quarrelled with his brother and left home. Years afterwards, he felt sorry and when he went back, he found his brother had died and he could not find his sister.
বাবার এক ভাই ও এক বোন ছিল। তিনি একবার তার ভাইয়ের সাথে ঝগড়া করে বাড়ি-ছাড়া হয়েছিলেন। বহু বছর পর, যখন তার অনুশোচনা হলো, তিনি বাড়ি ফিরলেন। গিয়ে দেখলেন, তার ভাই মারা গেছেন ও তার বোনের কোনো খোঁজ পেলেন না।
The letter Father had just received was from his sister, Aunt Esther, mother of Dick and Mimi. She was a widow who lived hundreds of miles inland. One day when Dick and Mimi were out in the wood, they discovered the kite on the top of a tree and carried it home. When their mother saw the kite patched with the letter she had once written to her brother. Philippa was her mother’s name and Claude was her father’s. She knew who we must be. So she sat down and wrote to Big Half Moon and Father received her letter.
যে চিঠিটা তিনি এই মাত্র পেলেন, সেটা ছিল তার বোন, এস্থার পিসিমার। এস্থার পিসিমা ডিক ও মিমির মা। তিনি বিধবা এবং মেনল্যান্ড এ বহু দূরে থাকেন। একদিন যখন ডিক ও মিমি জঙ্গলে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিল, তার একটি গাছের উপর ঘুড়িটি দেখতে পায় ও বাড়ি নিয়ে আসে। তারপর যখন এস্থার পিসিমা ঘুড়ির ওপর লাগানো চিঠিটি দেখতে পান, তিনি চিনতে পারেন এটা সেই চিঠি যেটা তিনি অনেক দিন আগে তার ভাই কে লিখেছিলেন। তার মায়ের নাম ছিল ফিলিপ্পা ও বাবার নাম ছিল ক্লড। তিনি পরিষ্কার বুঝতে পারছিলেন আমরা করা। তাই তিনি বিগ হাফ মুনের উদ্দেশ্যে চিঠি লিখলেন এবং আমার বাবা সেই চিঠি পেলেন।
Next day, Father went and brought Aunt Esther and Dick and Mimi with him. They have been here ever since. Aunt Esther is such a dear, and Dick and Mimi are too jolly for words.
পরের দিন বাবা গেলেন এবং ডিক, মিমি ও এস্থার পিসিমাকে নিয়ে এলেন। তার পর থেকে তারা সবাই আমাদের সাথে এখানেই থাকে। এস্থার পিসিমা খুব ভালো এবং ডিক ও মিমি গল্পঃ করতে খুব ভালোবাসে।
But the best part of it all is that we have relations now!
