Manoj Das Short Biography- 100 words

Manoj Das is one of the most noted Indian English writers. He was born in 1934 in Balasore, Odisha. He was a bilingual writer who was fluent in Odia and English. Das worked as an editor, writer, professor and columnist. He was an award-winning writer. He wrote many novels, short stories, poems, travelogues and articles on history and culture. His popular works are “The Bride of Krishna”, “In Quest of the mythical forest” and “One and a Quarter of Man”. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Academy fellowship and Saraswati Samman. He died on 27th April 2021 in Puducherry.

Manoj Das was an Indian award-winning bilingual writer who wrote in Odia and English. He wrote many novels, short stories, poems travelogues and articles on history and culture.

Manoj Das was born in the village of Shankhari, Balasore Odisha in 1934. He settled as an ashramite of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry in 1963. He worked as an English professor at the Sri Aurobindo international centre of Education, Pondicherry and concentrated on novel writing. Das was a youth leader in his college days. He played an active role in the Afro-Asian student conference at Bandung, Indonesia in 1959.

Das edited a cultural magazine “The Heritage” published from Chennai in 1980. He also wrote columns in the Times of India, The Hindustan Times, The Hindu and the Statesman. Among other important positions’ Das was a member of the general council of Sahitya Academy, New Delhi 1998-2022 and the Author-consultant, Ministry of Education, Government of Singapore, 1983-85. He was the leader of the Indian delegation of writers to China in 1999.

He got recognition in the form of the Sahitya Academy Award in 1972. Orissa Akademi Award, Sarala Award, Vishuba Award, Sahitya Bharati Award, Saraswati Samman and Padma Shree (2001).
