Nayantara Sehgal

Nayantara Sehgal is one of the first Indian female writers in English who has received immense recognition. She was born in 1927 in an influential family. Her father Ranjit Sitaram Pandit was a barrister who had served and died in prison for supporting the Indian Independence movement. Sehgal’s mother Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was Motilal Nehru’s daughter and Jawaharlal Nehru’s sister. She too had been in prison for supporting the freedom struggle. India’s response to the crisis caused by political changes is dealt with in her fiction. In spite of being a part of the Nehru family, Sehgal has always maintained a clear and independent political view. In 1986, she received the Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel ‘Rich Like Us’. As a sign of protest, Sehgal returned her Sahitya Academy Award in 2015.
