Alfred George Gardiner was born on 2 June 1865 in Chelmsford Essex in England. His father was Henry James Gardner and his mother was Susanna Gardiner. By occupation, he was a journalist, author and editor.

He started working at the Chelmsford Chronicle and Bournemouth directory in his boyhood. Later in 1887, he joined the Northern Daily Telegraph. He become the editor of the Blackburn weekly telegraph in 1899. He became the editor of the Daily News in 1902 but resigned the job in 1999. In 1915 he started writing for the Star magazine under the pseudonym Alpha of the Plough. He was asked to choose the name of a star as a pseudonym. So he chose Alpha, the brightest star in the Plough constellation.

He wrote many essays. Some of his popular works are Pillars of Society 1913, Peebles on the Shore 1916, Leaves in the Wind 1920 Many Furrows 1924. He was also the chairman of the National Anti Sweating League which campaigned for a minimum wage in the industry. This great English author died at the age of 80 on 3 March 1946 in Buckingham, England.
