Unit 1 Summary of Father’s Help
Swaminathan, the protagonist of this story, is a student of Albert Mission School in Malgudi. He dislikes attending school daily. On Mondays, he shows additional dislike for school. When his mother asks him if he won’t go to school, Swami resorts to a lie and says that he has a headache. Then his father appears on the scene. He is very strict and is hell-bent to send him to school. Swami now sticks to another pretend of getting late for school. He invents more lies and tries to assure his father that certain Samuel is a very ill-tempered teacher. He never pardons any lapse. He even canes his students to the point of bleeding.
Unit 2 Summary of Father’s Help
Swami’s stubborn father, now, takes it a challenge and doubles his intention to send Swami to school. He even seals a letter of complaint for the Headmaster demanding Samueľ s dismissal. Swami now falls into a dilemma. His active imagination angers his father but his guilt weighs down his mind.
Unit 3 Summary of Faher
He goes to school late but Samuel treats him very kindly. When the school breaks up, he heads off to the Headmaster but finds his room closed. He comes back home with the letter. His father tears apart the letter and calls Swami a ‘coward’. Swami fails to persuade his father that the Headmaster is on leave for a week.
