From Metropolitan College he passed the F.A. examination in 1882 and won the Gilchrist Scholarship. He then went to London and obtained his B.Sc. and D.Sc. degrees from Edinburgh University. Returning home he joined the Presidency College as a professor in 1889. He invented Mercurous Nitrate in 1896 and established the famous Bengal Chemicals four years later. He was appointed the Palit Professor of the Science College in 1916. This great son of Bengal passed away in 1944.
